Archives Update

Maintenance of the Archive will never end, though we are close to having all primary materials scanned and digitised.  Typically though, just when we think we have processed everything, a box of old slides or roll of negatives appears and we are back into “discovery”.

Such a find was recently made that included old negatives that showed the relocation in 1937 to Quay St Bulimba from the original Newstead yard.  (The Council resumed the Newstead businesses, including many boat building yards, along that bank to make way for Brisbane’s new shipping wharfs).

Norm Jnr’s words (as quoted in Lindy Salter’s book ‘Boxer’s Legacy’) are captured in this slightly out of focus negative:

“We punted all the stuff – band saws, circular saws. We pulled up all the slipways. Some of the Cyprus pine that had been buried in the mud there for forty years was still perfect… It was a great time. There were two apprentices about the same age, and we used to load the punts up and tow them over and unload the stuff. We had a skylark there for about three months!”

Crossing the river to Bulimba, dinghy trolley and skiffs in tow – the last one almost certainly the 16fter Joyce Too.

We are continuously maintaining the Archive and always interested in your stories, photos, etc. Don’t hesitate to contact us if you think you may have something of interest to us or found a mistake when reviewing the Archive online  – the tiniest piece in the puzzle can make all the difference!

Big thanks to Tony who contributed to information on Captain Heath in the “Your Stories” section of the  online Archive.  We love it when someone takes the time to do that!
